Possibly one of the biggest threats to traditional adviser revenue streams in the near term is the impact of AI on the £8 -£10bn annual revenue stream generated from periodic reviews which we discussed previously. For example, by copying and pasting my own investment portfolio of funds, ETFS and individual stocks held via AJ Bell into ChatGPT, I can immediately gain full insight as to what’s going on under the hood. It tells me the geographic and sector distribution of holdings, identifies specific risks from any over concentration and takes account of any changes I might want to give it in terms of my own risk profile, changes to personal goals and multiple what-if scenarios based on my own tailored inputs. ChatGPT will provide me a detailed report with charts, graphs and a simple to understand analysis of what’s going on. And guess what? It cost me absolutely nothing apart from a small amount of time. In addition, it is totally unbiased. AI is not trying to sell me advice, it’s not concerned about preserving annual fees and it certainly isn’t trying to keep me invested in areas that generate high AUM charges. This is empowerment at a human level. Yes, it requires some education, but the resources are out there for everyone to access to empower them to make their own decisions that are in their own best interests, not the interests of advisery firms.
