T.F.O friday: Building a Total Family Office for Every Family

Most families have pieces of a plan. Few have a plan that connects the pieces.

A pension here. A mortgage there. A will written years ago. An ageing parent who may need care. Children finding their feet. Perhaps a business, a property, or responsibilities shared across generations.

Each part may have received attention. But who helps the family see how it all fits together?

That is the question behind Total Family Office, a new proposition we are developing at the Academy of Life Planning. And this Friday, we begin bringing an inner circle together to help shape it.

T.F.O friday starts on Friday 16 October 2026 at 2 pm UK time, on Zoom. These inner circle meetings will focus on the business development of the Total Family Office proposition: turning a clear purpose into a useful, accessible and sustainable service.

Family office thinking, opened up

A private family office can bring coordination to a wealthy family’s affairs. It can connect decisions about assets, businesses, succession, responsibilities and the future across generations.

But the need for joined-up thinking is not reserved for people with substantial investment portfolios.

A family supporting an elderly parent while helping an adult child build a livelihood faces real planning complexity. So does a small business owner whose income, retirement and family security depend on the same business. So does a household trying to balance today’s needs with tomorrow’s commitments.

Complexity does not begin at a particular level of wealth.

Total Family Office aims to make the structured thinking associated with family offices accessible to any family. It brings an AI-guided planning process together with the Academy’s GAME Plan methodology, while keeping understanding, ownership and decisions with the people whose lives are involved.

Start with the family

The starting point is life: who belongs to the family, what matters to them, how they depend on one another, and what they want to build or protect.

Money enters that conversation alongside the family’s other resources: skills, relationships, knowledge, health, time and the capacity to earn, care, lead and adapt.

A family can inherit financial assets without inheriting the capability to manage them. It can also have relatively little financial capital and considerable potential in its people.

That is why Total Family Office puts human capital before financial capital. The purpose is to help families recognise their resources, understand their commitments and make deliberate choices across generations.

The family is the system. The portfolio is one part of it.

From scattered information to a coherent plan

The proposed experience takes families through eight connected stages:

  1. Welcome and context: what has prompted the conversation and what the family hopes to achieve.
  2. Family map: the people, relationships, roles and interdependencies.
  3. Family vision: shared values, intentions and hopes across generations.
  4. Human capital: skills, education, leadership and succession capacity.
  5. Lifetime liabilities: lifestyle commitments, care responsibilities and other obligations.
  6. Financial capital: a high-level picture of assets, liquidity and concentrations of risk.
  7. Governance and authority: who decides, who has authority, and when matters need review or specialist input.
  8. The plan: a readable, downloadable record that brings the whole picture together.

The intended output is a Total Family Office Plan: a foundation for informed conversations and deliberate action. AI helps organise information, surface gaps and prepare questions. The family retains judgement and responsibility for decisions.

Your plan. Your system. Your support.

Total Family Office is being designed as the multi-generational planning layer within the Academy ecosystem.

The GAME Plan provides the life planning foundation. My Life™ provides the personal data and membership layer. Navigator™ supports modelling and exploring scenarios. A Total Wealth Planner™ provides human support when a family needs help working through complexity, transition or difficult conversations.

The proposition specification envisages access through My Life™ membership at £4.99 per month, alongside the wider Academy app suite. That is the proposed service membership; this announcement marks the start of the inner circle’s development meetings.

The principle is consistent throughout: families should be able to understand and operate their own planning system, drawing on appropriate expertise when needed.

Why an inner circle?

A compelling idea still has to work in people’s lives.

The T.F.O friday meetings will give us a place to examine the proposition together: who needs it, how to explain it, what a useful first experience looks like, and how to build a business model that supports family agency.

Our development questions include:

  • Which family situations should we focus on first?
  • How do we help people move from an AI conversation to meaningful action?
  • How much human support will families need, and how should that support be offered?
  • How do we make responsibilities, privacy and professional boundaries clear?
  • What evidence will show that families understand more, coordinate better and can act with greater confidence?

This is a working circle for developing the proposition. We will bring questions, test assumptions and turn what we learn into practical improvements.

The business model matters as much as the technology. If success depends on keeping families dependent, we have missed the point. We want to build something sustainable whose value grows as families become more capable.

Clear boundaries, purposeful support

Total Family Office is intended for educational and exploratory planning. It does not recommend financial products or replace legal, tax or regulated financial advice. Where a question requires specialist expertise, the process should help the family recognise that need and prepare for the appropriate conversation.

The ambition is to make expertise easier to use well: a family that understands its situation can ask better questions, give clearer instructions and retain ownership of its decisions.
