You’re all doing financial planning wrong.
When one person stands against the crowd, it’s easy to dismiss them as difficult, disruptive, or wrong. But what if that one person simply sees the truth differently?
For years, I’ve been that “annoying guy” in your feed saying the financial planning industry has lost its way. It’s not about products, portfolios, or prizes. It’s about people.
Let’s settle this once and for all — five principles that define what true financial planning should be. If you can disprove any of them, I’ll stop talking about it. But if not, maybe it’s time to ask: why are we still doing it wrong?
1️⃣ Purpose before profit
Your role is to make your client’s life better. When you do that with integrity, their gratitude and payment follow naturally. That’s structural trust.
2️⃣ Two kinds of goals
Every human being pursues two kinds of goals:
- Basic needs – survival, safety, and comfort.
- Soul desires – purpose, growth, and contribution.
We’re meant to meet the first so we can live the second.
3️⃣ Wealth isn’t just money
Around 80% of wealth is human capital — your health, mindset, relationships, and spirit. Financial capital makes up the other 20%, and retail investments? Barely 1%.
If you’re only managing the 1%, you’re not planning the person — you’re intermediating a product.
4️⃣ Plan the life before the money
True financial planning starts with the human being — their goals, values, and mission — and only then designs the financial architecture to support it.
5️⃣ Empower, don’t exploit
Our duty is to restore autonomy, not dependence. Clients should walk away from planning sessions with clarity and confidence, not confusion and compliance.
