On Monday 12th May, I’ll be attending an urgent summit at the House of Commons: “Another Post Office Scandal? More Than Ten Years of Injustice for Investment Fraud Victims vs HMRC”, hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Investment Fraud & Fairer Financial Services.
This summit couldn’t be more important—or more overdue.
Across the UK, thousands of victims of investment and pension fraud are being relentlessly pursued by HMRC for tax liabilities, penalties, and interest on money they never truly received. These are individuals who entrusted their life savings to professional advisers, only to be defrauded, financially ruined, and then—unbelievably—treated by HMRC as if they were tax avoiders, not victims of crime.
For over a decade, many have been trapped in a devastating cycle: robbed by fraudsters, blamed by institutions, abandoned by the system. Some have lost not only their savings but their health, their homes, their relationships. Tragically, clinical psychologists have assessed some victims as being at risk of suicide because of the unrelenting pressure.
The parallels with the Post Office Horizon and Loan Charge scandals are chilling: institutional failure, a refusal to admit mistakes, and a cruel determination to pursue the innocent while ignoring systemic wrongdoing.
At this summit, we’ll be asking the urgent questions:
- Why is HMRC not focusing its considerable powers on the perpetrators of fraud?
- Why is it doubling down on victims, compounding their trauma?
- Why does HMRC still lack a policy framework to protect those who have been exploited?
- And crucially: Is HMRC in breach of its own Charter by failing to treat victims fairly?
Victims Commissioner Baroness Newlove has written to the Chancellor, demanding a review of HMRC’s treatment of these victims. Yet the government is now consulting on plans to expand HMRC’s enforcement powers even further—without offering redress or protection to those already suffering.
We must call time on this injustice.
The summit will launch a national campaign, not only to demand fair tax treatment and redress for victims, but to shine a light on a system that risks perpetuating harm. It’s a call for accountability, transparency, and compassion—values at the very heart of the Academy of Life Planning’s mission.
I’m proud to stand alongside victims, advocates, parliamentarians, and legal experts at this pivotal moment. We must not let history repeat itself. Let’s ensure these victims are finally seen, heard, and treated with the dignity they deserve.
If you’re affected by these issues or would like to support the campaign for fairer financial services, I’d love to connect. Together, we can be part of the solution.
