Tick, tick, boom.
This was the moment they were waiting for.
While the government slashes £5 billion from welfare, the insurance industry swoops in with a smile and a business plan. The Income Protection Task Force didn’t miss a beat—they’ve written to the Prime Minister offering to “play a pivotal role” in supporting benefit reforms.
Let’s be clear: this isn’t partnership. This is privatisation.
It’s killing two birds with one stone for Reeves and Starmer—cut the safety net and sell the parachute. And who’s footing the bill?
Working people. Their employers. Their dwindling pay packets.
The Real Agenda Behind the Smile
You can almost hear the applause behind closed doors. The protection industry frames this as a solution—a way to build a “financially resilient population.” But what they’re really offering is a transfer of risk from the state to the individual.
Your future misfortune? That’s your responsibility now.
Lost your job because of illness or disability? You’d better hope you bought a policy.
Because under this new model, if you don’t protect yourself, no one else will.
This isn’t resilience.
This is abandonment.
A Trojan Horse in a Suit
The open letter from the Income Protection Task Force is a masterclass in sugarcoated opportunism:
- They warn of the “misery” of long-term disability—then sell you a product to survive it.
- They talk about “early intervention” and “return to work support”—as if that negates the need for a public safety net.
- They want the government to “incentivise” those who buy private cover—translation: tax breaks for the insured, scraps for the rest.
But here’s what they don’t say:
🛑 Income protection is expensive—and inaccessible to those already struggling.
🛑 Pre-existing conditions? Good luck getting covered.
🛑 Claims processes? Often complicated and conditional.
🛑 Vocational rehab services? Only if your insurer says yes.
They’re not proposing a solution for everyone.
They’re carving out a market for themselves—and leaving the rest behind.
A System Designed to Squeeze
This isn’t just about benefits.
It’s about shifting the cost of sickness, injury, and unemployment onto workers and small businesses.
It’s about making your misfortune someone else’s profit.
Employers will be nudged to pay more. Employees will be told to prepare for the worst. And those who can’t afford the premiums? They’ll be thrown to the wolves.
Let’s call this what it is:
The slow-motion privatisation of the welfare state.
A retreat from responsibility dressed up as reform.
A betrayal packaged as progress.
We Need a Different Kind of Protection
What working people need isn’t another policy to pay for.
They need a holistic human capital strategy—publicly funded, universally accessible, and compassionately delivered.
They need:
🔹 Mental and emotional wellbeing support
🔹 Skills and mindset development
🔹 Physical environment adaptation
🔹 Real opportunities to create meaningful, sustainable livelihoods
They need a GAME Plan. Not a gamble.
We already know it works.
We’ve seen it with The Blair Project.
We’ve delivered it through holistic wealth planning.
This isn’t theory. It’s proof.
The Lesson for the Reader
If you’re reading this and thinking, “Well, at least there’ll be something for those who buy in”—remember: today’s fringe idea is tomorrow’s policy.
And once the welfare state is gone, there’s no going back.
This isn’t a partnership.
It’s a power grab.
This isn’t resilience.
It’s risk shifting.
This isn’t compassionate reform.
It’s the commodification of human misfortune.
