There couldn’t be a starker image of the disconnect between Government mandarins and the real-world suffering outside the ivory towers of Great George Street.
While farmers prepare to lose generational land and pensioners face the prospect of their hard-earned nest eggs being taxed after death, HMRC has seen fit to hand out an “Expert of the Year” award to the man who helped design it all.
Yes—James Mee, the civil servant behind the latest inheritance tax raid that targets farms, family businesses, and pensions, has been officially congratulated for his contribution to policies that many consider an outright assault on Britain’s rural backbone and savers’ dignity.
Let’s be clear:
This isn’t about tax justice. It’s about extraction masked as reform.
- From April 2027, unspent pensions will face inheritance tax. That’s money previously tax-relieved when contributed, taxed once when drawn, and from 2027, taxed again at death—a double blow to responsible savers.
- From next year, farms and family-run businesses will lose their 100% inheritance tax relief beyond £1 million. The Treasury projects £500m per year from this.
- The bereaved, mid-grief, will now be expected to calculate pension tax liabilities for their loved ones.
All this—at a time when the Office for Budget Responsibility itself says the figures carry “high uncertainty.”
But here’s the twist: While public outrage simmers, Mr Mee went online to proudly accept his award, celebrating the role he played in these devastating changes. Meanwhile, grieving families and rural communities prepare for asset seizures, evictions, and financial ruin.
Commenters have called it “vile,” “disgraceful,” “a slap in the face to farmers,” and likened it to “land reform Mugabe-style.” That’s not hyperbole—it’s the lived reality for many.
The public sees what this is:
Policy not just made in an ivory tower, but weaponised from one.
And let’s not forget the long-term consequences. Why save for a pension now, if it’s going to be taxed after death? Why bother keeping the farm in the family if it has to be sold to pay the state?
The social contract is being rewritten in real time—and not in the people’s favour.
We don’t need “Experts of the Year.”
We need guardians of the future.
