Caught Between Ages: The Piscean Leader in an Aquarian Shift

By Steve Conley

“The Age of Pisces was about hierarchy, secrecy, and intermediaries. The Age of Aquarius is about transparency, truth, and liberation. Leaders who cling to the old way will find themselves broken by the new wave.”

Leadership is undergoing a seismic shift.

We are witnessing a collective transition—from the rigid, institutional leadership of the Piscean Age to the purpose-driven, transparent, and human-centred leadership of the Aquarian Age. This isn’t just generational change or digital disruption; it’s an evolution of consciousness.

Some leaders ride the wave.
Others drown in it.

“Human beings interpret change in different ways—some through logic and evidence, others through intuition, cycles, and symbols. What follows may not resonate with everyone, but for many, the transition from the Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius offers a compelling lens to understand what’s unfolding in finance, politics, and society. Whether literal or metaphorical, it helps explain why the systems that once felt solid are now crumbling—and why new paradigms, grounded in transparency, empowerment, and collaboration, are taking shape.”

The Piscean Archetype

The Piscean Age, spanning roughly 2,000 years, was marked by:

Centralised authority

Top-down hierarchies

Obedience over authenticity

Control via mystery and myth

The archetypal Piscean leader saw themselves as the guardian of institutions—protecting brands, preserving reputation, upholding the sacred narrative. These leaders were often groomed for loyalty, not transformation.

But as the Aquarian Age dawns—with its demand for truth, openness, and distributed power—Piscean leadership becomes maladaptive. In the best cases, outdated. In the worst, dangerous.

The Case of Paula Vennells: The Wrong Way to Lead Through a Shift

Was Paula Vennells, the former CEO of Post Office Ltd, simply unlucky? Or was she a tragic exemplar of a Piscean leader unable to transcend the age?

What unfolded under her leadership—despite being a priest, despite outward moral posturing—was a textbook descent into self-justification and organisational rot.

Drawing from the psychological insight in “Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me)”, we understand how leaders like Vennells fall prey to cognitive dissonance: the unbearable clash between their actions and their self-image.

Rather than confront the pain of being wrong, they double down:

Denying mounting evidence

Silencing dissenters

Prioritising institutional reputation over human life

Vennells didn’t set out to destroy lives. But by refusing to listen, learn, and let go, she became the vortex that sucked countless others into ruin.

This is not to excuse. It is to explain. And it is a warning.

The Aquarian Contrast: Leading with Integrity in the Age of Light

Aquarian leadership requires a complete reprogramming of the ego. It is no longer about guarding the temple. It is about dismantling the false altars and co-creating anew.

The Right Way to Lead in the Shift involves:

🌱 Humility over Hubris: Admit when you’re wrong—early and often.

🕊️ Transparency over Control: Share information, even when it’s uncomfortable.

👥 Distributed Wisdom: Listen to the frontline, the margins, the voices that challenge.

🧭 Values-Driven Action: Let ethics trump reputation. Do the right thing, even if it costs you.

🔍 Reflection over Reaction: Don’t defend decisions. Examine them. Evolve them.

This is not easy. It requires inner work. It requires systems change. But most of all, it requires courage—the Aquarian kind.

Lessons for Incumbent Boards and Leaders

Challenge groupthink. Dissent is a gift.

Build ethics into KPIs. Good intentions aren’t governance.

Replace loyalty with accountability. Question the unchallenged.

Listen to whistleblowers. They’re your early warning system.

Prepare for moral injury. Denial today is devastation tomorrow.

A Final Thought

The Piscean leader fears the loss of face.
The Aquarian leader fears the loss of soul.

The shift between these Ages is not smooth. It’s chaotic, confronting, and often cruel. But it is necessary. Because as long as we allow leaders to justify evil in the name of institution, the system will continue to produce more Vennells—tragic, well-meaning perhaps, but ultimately complicit.

To lead in this new Age is not to protect the brand.
It is to protect the truth.

And the time is now.

About Get SAFE

Get SAFE (Support After Financial Exploitation) was born from a simple truth: too many victims of financial abuse are left to suffer in silence.

We exist for people like Ian—for the ones who did everything right, only to be failed by the systems they trusted. We know that behind every vanished pension, every ignored complaint, and every stonewalled letter is a person—frightened, exhausted, and too often alone.

Get SAFE offers more than sympathy. We offer structure, support, and solidarity.
We provide a voice where there’s been silence, and clarity where there’s been confusion.
We stand beside those who have been exploited, not just to help them recover—but to help them reclaim their story and rebuild their future.

Because financial justice is not a luxury.
It’s a human right.

If you or someone you know has been affected by financial exploitation, we are here.
You are not alone.
