Justice & Recovery Hub: Turning Tragedy into a Movement for Change

Today’s Sunday Times shares the heartbreaking story of Colin Chudley, a 68-year-old man driven to despair after losing his entire life savings—£260,000—to a sophisticated and coercive financial scam. Despite his efforts to recover, Colin was overwhelmed by the stress and died suddenly while canoeing, just weeks after the fraud was uncovered.

Colin’s story is tragically familiar to us at the Academy of Life Planning, where we support victims of corporate financial crime referred by the Transparency Taskforce. Every week, we hear from people just like Colin—ordinary individuals blindsided by extraordinary deception, left without justice, support, or a way forward.

Our work at the Justice & Recovery Hub is dedicated to them—and carried out in memory of Ian Davis, a courageous campaigner from the Transparency Taskforce who, like Colin, lost his life savings to financial fraud and ultimately took his own life. We honour Ian’s legacy by making sure others are never left to face such trauma alone.

A Hidden Tragedy in Plain Sight

Over the course of six months, Colin was manipulated by scammers posing as insolvency professionals. Using fake documents, cloned company identities, and psychological coercion, they tricked him into making 95 separate payments. As his life savings vanished, so did his sense of safety, trust, and self-worth.

Even after Colin realised the truth and reported the fraud, the harassment continued. Letters from fake debt collectors threatened him with court action and asset seizure. The emotional toll was devastating. His wife, Greta, described him as becoming withdrawn, consumed with guilt, and haunted by the fear that he had failed his family.

On April 12th, Colin—once a physically fit, regular canoeist and cyclist—collapsed while paddling alone. He died in hospital later that day.

Why We Exist: The Justice & Recovery Hub

Colin’s case is not isolated. It represents a growing pattern of institutional neglect, regulatory failure, and psychological abuse affecting thousands across the UK. That’s why we created the Justice & Recovery Hub—a national, survivor-led initiative that provides free support and a path forward for those devastated by corporate and financial wrongdoing.

How We Help — Always Free to Victims

Our services are built to meet victims where they are—emotionally, practically, and financially:

  • Rebuild & Thrive Masterclasses
Life planning workshops that empower survivors to reclaim their future—emotionally, financially, and spiritually.
  • Recovery & Justice Strategy
AI-assisted tools and expert guidance to support citizen investigators in asset tracing and complaint resolution.
  • Advocacy & Campaigns
We amplify survivor voices, raise public awareness, and press for systemic change in how fraud is policed and prevented.
  • Peer Support Groups
Safe spaces for connection, solidarity, and healing—led by those who’ve been there and are walking the path together.

All services are free to those in need, funded through a sustainable model of cross-subsidy, sponsorship, and reinvested profits from the Academy of Life Planning. This ensures accessible, ethical support without cost or compromise.

From Pain to Purpose

Colin’s death must not be in vain. His story is a stark reminder of how devastating the consequences of financial crime can be—and how little protection currently exists for victims. We are determined to change that.

Our mission is to rebuild lives, restore dignity, and reform the systems that allow this abuse to persist. We do this in memory of Colin, Ian, and the many others whose lives have been torn apart—and in service of the countless more who still need help.

If you or someone you know has been impacted by corporate or financial crime: You are not alone.
