Lisa King never imagined her life would become a cautionary tale about the devastating human cost of financial system failure. Yet today, from a hospital bed, she bravely shares her story—a story that challenges not just a bank’s policies, but its very conscience.
A Life Turned Upside Down
It started like any other life: a home, a family, a future. Lisa and her husband Peter were navigating the everyday rhythms of work, bills, and raising children. But in 2013, a simple request to Halifax—part of Lloyds Banking Group—set in motion a chain of events that would unravel everything.
Peter asked for a better mortgage deal. The bank refused. Despite knowing Peter was seriously unwell, they continued to pursue them—letters, calls, court action—relentlessly pressing for repossession. The stress became unbearable.
In March 2014, Lisa left for work as usual. But something felt wrong. Peter hadn’t kissed her goodbye, hadn’t given his usual warm farewell. Listening to her instincts, she turned around and went home. There, in the garage, she found him—standing beneath a rope tied to the joist, a stool beneath his feet.
He was moments away from ending his life.
She stopped him that day. But the battle wasn’t over.
A Slow, Cruel Erosion
The pressure didn’t ease. The bank’s pursuit continued. In October 2020, Peter suffered a catastrophic heart attack. He died—his body, quite literally, breaking under the weight of emotional and financial strain. Lisa lost her husband. Her children lost their father. And still, the system pressed on.
Now, in 2024, Lisa lies in a hospital bed after a devastating fall and six-hour surgery to reconstruct her shattered leg and knee. And still, Lloyds Banking Group is pursuing repossession of her home—knowing she is unable to defend herself from her hospital bed.
“My message is simple,” Lisa says. “We are all human beings. Please treat us as such. Don’t treat us as cannon fodder. You can have your rules and regulations, but there is a human cost to every decision you make.”
“By Your Side?”
For years, Lloyds Banking Group has proudly declared its strapline: “By Your Side.” But as Lisa’s story makes painfully clear, the reality behind the slogan raises a haunting question.
Where were they when Peter begged for help, knowing the toll it was taking on his health?
Where were they when Lisa pleaded for time, for compassion, for the chance to fight for her home?
Where are they now, as she lies in hospital, facing the repossession of the last thing tying her to the life she once knew?
The truth is stark: Lisa was not alone in this experience. Tens of thousands of customers, reports reveal, faced similar treatment—vulnerabilities overlooked, distress signals ignored, human suffering dismissed as collateral damage in pursuit of profit.
Her plea is not just for herself. It’s a challenge to every executive, every regulator, every decision-maker who dares to look away:
“Take a good look in the mirror. Ask yourself, ‘Am I that person? Should I be doing this?’”
Because beyond the corporate straplines and glossy campaigns lies the lived reality of families broken, homes lost, lives ended too soon.
You can put a price on a mortgage.
But you can’t put a price on a life.
A Call to Conscience
Lisa’s courage in sharing her story is an act of defiance. It’s a refusal to let Peter’s memory—and the suffering they endured—be reduced to a line on a balance sheet.
“I don’t know if I’ll even have a home by the time I leave hospital,” she admits. “But if anyone has a heart who can help me, please, tell my story.”
And so we must.
Because if a bank claims to be “By Your Side,” we must ask:
Are they?
And if they are not—then who will be?
Peter King was a hardworking cab driver. He and his wife Lisa shared a happy, ordinary family life—until rising costs and Peter’s diagnosis with ME turned their world upside down. One day, Lisa came home to find Peter preparing to take his own life, overwhelmed by the pressures they faced. Watch their heartbreaking story—a story of love, loss, and a bank that refused to help.
