Maybe you were at home, maybe you were tired. Maybe you just wanted to believe again. Believe in a future, a nest egg, a little security. So, you listened. You trusted. And you sent the money.

What followed wasn’t a market crash. It was a betrayal. A crime wrapped in a pitch, disguised as opportunity. They offered crypto, gold, wine, or property—things that sounded solid. Safe. Lucrative.

But it was all a lie.

In the first half of 2024 alone, investment fraudsters conned Brits out of at least £56 million. That’s the official figure—but the real number is higher. Because shame keeps people silent. Because too many believe it was their fault.

In October 2024, something changed.

Until then, victims of so-called Authorised Push Payment (APP) scams were left to the mercy of banks—forced to beg, explain, prove. One victim might be repaid. Another, denied. Same scam. Same loss. Different outcome. It was a rigged lottery.

But under new rules, banks and payment firms must refund victims—up to £85,000—within five business days. No more silence. No more months of wrangling. No more luck of the draw.

It’s a start. But it’s not the whole story.

If you’ve been scammed, here’s what you need to know:

You have rights. Since 7 October 2024, UK rules mandate that victims of APP scams be reimbursed—unless the bank can prove gross negligence or complicity. That’s a high bar.
You have time. You can report a scam up to 13 months after realising it happened. Even if it occurred before October, many banks will still consider your claim. Push them.
You have recourse. If your bank refuses to pay, the Financial Ombudsman Service can order compensation of up to £430,000—and it won’t cost you a penny to apply.

Report the fraud to your bank or payment provider immediately.
Request a reimbursement under the PSR’s mandatory scheme.
Keep records. Screenshots, emails, call logs—everything matters.
Contact the Financial Ombudsman if the bank denies your claim.
Don’t let shame silence you. Tell your story. Speak your truth.

And if you lost more than £85,000? There’s still hope. Some firms go beyond the cap. The ombudsman can too. Fight for every pound. But more importantly—fight for your peace.
