Empowering Homeowners: 55 Plus Navigate Financial Products with Confidence

This trend reflects a broader movement towards empowerment, where individuals are proactively managing their finances rather than delegating this responsibility to banks and financial advisers.

In today’s digital age, a growing number of homeowners, particularly those aged 55 and over, are taking control of their financial decisions. Empowerment in financial planning is becoming increasingly popular as more individuals seek clarity and independence in managing their finances.

According to a recent study by the Equity Release Council and the Equity Release Supermarket, nearly two-thirds (62%) of UK homeowners in this age group rely on price comparison websites to compare financial products.

The Rise of Empowerment in Financial Planning

The council’s bi-annual Home Advantage study, which surveyed 5,000 adults, highlights a significant trend: older homeowners are increasingly turning to digital tools to navigate their financial options. This trend reflects a broader movement towards empowerment, where individuals are proactively managing their finances rather than delegating this responsibility to banks and financial advisers.

Jim Boyd, CEO of the Equity Release Council, emphasises the importance of this shift.

“Over-55 homeowners see consumer websites as their first port of call when researching financial information and are more comfortable than some other age groups when using price comparison websites,” he says.

However, he also notes the continuing value of human advice, suggesting that a balanced approach combining digital research and expert consultation is ideal.

Note: The Equity Release Council represents the interests of the following members:

  1. Providers: Companies that offer equity release products, such as lifetime mortgages and home reversion plans.
  2. Advisers: Financial advisers who specialise in equity release and provide guidance to consumers considering these products.
  3. Solicitors: Legal professionals who assist with the legal aspects of equity release transactions.
  4. Surveyors: Professionals who assess the value of properties involved in equity release transactions.
  5. Intermediaries: Organisations that act as intermediaries between consumers and equity release providers, often offering comparison services and advice.
  6. Other Stakeholders: This can include anyone involved in the equity release market, such as trade bodies, consultants, and service providers supporting the industry.

The Equity Release Council aims to uphold high standards and protect the interests of consumers by ensuring its members adhere to a strict code of conduct and best practices.

Addressing Confusion and Building Confidence

Despite the growing use of these resources, the Home Advantage study reveals that a third of over-55 homeowners still feel confused about their options in later life. Notably, women in this age bracket report higher levels of confusion and lower confidence in their retirement finances compared to men.
